Iowa is full of wildlife, including snakes, squirrels, raccoons, skunks, opossums, and more. Wildlife removal is a complex field. I recommend professional Ankeny wildlife control services if you want to solve a critter problem legally and correctly. For example, we specialize in animals in the attic, which have broken into the house and almost always have a nest of baby animals. It is necessary to perform correct preventative repairs to keep pest animals a out of your house for good. We perform full building inspection, do the the repairs and we also offer attic decontamination if necessary. Rats and mice love to live in attics, and can chew wires or leave droppings. Some Ankeny animals frequently enter homes, and correct removal is not a simple task.

County Animal ServicesDOG or CAT: If you need assistance with a domestic animal, such as a dog or a cat, you need to call your local Polk County Animal Control for assistance. They can help you out with issues such as stray dogs, stray cats, vaccinations, licenses, pet adoption, lost pets, and more. If you have a wildlife problem, you can try calling the Polk County animal control, and see what they have to say, but they will certainly not help you with a complex wildlife problem such as critters in your attic. They are a free government agency that helps with dog and cat issues only.

Ankeny Wildlife Tip:

A little about raccoon eviction fluid

When it comes to repellents that could prevent a raccoon from taking refuge in your attic (or some other tight, warm space in your house), few methods are as effective in getting the job done as using raccoon eviction fluid.

Not to be confused with raccoon repellent which is mostly naphthalene (the stuff that's used in mothballs), raccoon eviction fluids have been around since the early 90s, with their popularity rising in the recent years, what with people realizing their effectiveness over other methods.

Here's a little about this repellent.

What it's made of

Aside from what the individual company adds to the product to make their signature composition, raccoon eviction fluid is primarily male raccoon urine and other glandular secretions. Now although that doesn't sound like one the more pleasant substances to work with (it smells just like you'd expect it to), that doesn't mean it's any less effective at getting the job done.

How can a male raccoon's urine drive off other raccoons from your home? Well, to answer this question you need to first know two facts: One, that animals mark their territory by spraying it with their urine, and two, the raccoon that's taken up the board in your attic is probably a mother with babies.

Why it works

Did you know male raccoons KILL young kits (that's baby raccoons if you're wondering) that aren't their own without the least bit of sympathy and hesitation? No? Well, a mother raccoon does, and when you introduce the raccoon eviction fluid (which as we established before is primarily male raccoon urine), you're essentially marking the attic as a male raccoon's territory, the last place a mother would want her kids to be in. The result? She picks up her kids and leaves for fear of their safety.

The correct way to use it

If you're going to imitate the presence of a male raccoon in your attic, then you'd better do it right. Don't want the method to fail now do you? Douse the fluid in any material that might soak it up, like rags, or tennis balls and place them in different corners of the attic.

Better yet, douse the opening (the one you suspect the raccoon uses) with the fluid so that the next time the mother passes through, she's sure to catch a whiff of it and be alarmed. Within a few days (or even hours) your raccoon problem would be resolved.

However, it is possible that using the fluid doesn't work for you. Maybe, the mother raccoon is more afraid of what's out there than what a single mail could do to her children.

On the off-chance, it doesn't work…

Unfortunately, you're one of the unlucky few who'd have to resort to physically removing the animals from your home. In this case, it's preferable to use a live cage trap to remove the mother, and then removing the babies by hand (after taking necessary precautions of course). It's not the easiest of tasks, but it should always be preferred over poisoning.
