Iowa is full of wildlife, including snakes, squirrels, raccoons, skunks, opossums, and more. Wildlife removal is a complex field. I recommend professional Indianola wildlife control services if you want to solve a critter problem legally and correctly. For example, we specialize in animals in the attic, which have broken into the house and almost always have a nest of baby animals. It is necessary to perform correct preventative repairs to keep pest animals a out of your house for good. We perform full building inspection, do the the repairs and we also offer attic decontamination if necessary. Rats and mice love to live in attics, and can chew wires or leave droppings. Some Indianola animals frequently enter homes, and correct removal is not a simple task.

Indianola Wildlife Tip:

Are high pitch sound deterrent machines effective at repelling raccoons?

If you're shopping for repellents to drive the raccoon that's currently taken abode in your attic, chances are you've come across an advertisement for a machine that's supposed to drive these animals off by emitting a high-pitched sound. "A way to get rid of raccoons without using any cages, traps or poison? All I have to do is plug it in and forget about it? That's pretty neat!", You must be thinking to yourself.

Well, before you waste your money on such a device, know this: If there's one method that's been proven NOT to work for repelling raccoons from your home, it's using these machines. Surprised? Let's proceed.

Why you might be convinced they're effective

On paper, the logic seems bulletproof. Simply put the machine close to wherever your raccoon may have made its den and bombard its sanctuary with one of the most annoying sounds it could have the displeasure of experiencing in its entire life. Surely, the raccoon won't stand for this outrageous violation of its privacy and peace, and would want to move out immediately, right?

The reality of the scenario

The reason we're duped into thinking these machines may be any good is that we make one false assumption: The raccoons would be bothered by noise. Studies, experience, and even lab tests have shown that given a little time most animals adapt (or learn to put up with) noise deterrent solutions, as it eventually becomes a part of the norm for them. They can easily accustom themselves to ignore the noises from these machines, going about their daily routine effectively unhindered and unfazed.

Other noise related tactics you could use

While it's not been proved to be highly effective, you could employ a similar tactic by leaving your radio with a rock station near the den. The reason this is more effective (at least more than the high pitch sound machines) is that the noise being transmitted is both inconsistent and unpredictable, which makes it harder for raccoons to get used to. A tactic that won't cost you anything more than a little peace, it's certainly worth a try if you want to go the noise deterrent route.

That being said, it's still far from the best way to deter a raccoon.

Your best hope

When it comes to deterrents that you can use to drive raccoons out, there is no product more potent than raccoon eviction fluid. Made from a male raccoon's urine and other secretions, it works by marking the area sprayed with as a male's territory, something a mother raccoon wouldn't want to encroach upon and risk the lives of her children. If you've got a raccoon holed up in your attic (which is probably a mother by the way), there is no better solution out there.
