Maryland is full of wildlife, including snakes, squirrels, raccoons, skunks, opossums, and more. Wildlife removal is a complex field. I recommend professional Middle River wildlife control services if you want to solve a critter problem legally and correctly. For example, we specialize in animals in the attic, which have broken into the house and almost always have a nest of baby animals. It is necessary to perform correct preventative repairs to keep pest animals a out of your house for good. We perform full building inspection, do the the repairs and we also offer attic decontamination if necessary. Rats and mice love to live in attics, and can chew wires or leave droppings. Some Middle River animals frequently enter homes, and correct removal is not a simple task.

Middle River Wildlife Tip:

Exploring the biology of a Raccoon

Raccoons are among the most well-known animals in North America. Let's take a look at this intriguing creature.

Biology and appearance

A raccoon (scientific name: Procyon lotor) is an average-sized mammal that is native to North America. It stands out with its bushy tail ringed with alternating light and dark fur, and of course, the black mask with little black eyes. It can measure up to three feet in length and forty pounds in weight. It has rounded ears, a pointed nose, and white whiskers.

It also has five toes which it uses to grab and grip all sorts of things. It is very famous for its hands; the English word "raccoon" is derived from the Powhatan word aroughcun which means "one who scratches with his hands."

Habitat

Raccoons can be found in all sorts of places, as long as there is a lake or a suitable water source present. The ideal habitat for a raccoon is marshy or swampy land, as well as hardwood forests with streams. In forests specifically, they will live inside or under trees, but generally speaking, they live in burrows dug close to a water source. They can also be found in open areas such as prairies.

Of course, raccoons are almost as urbanized as pigeons and cats, so they are a common sight in cities and towns as well. Here, they will mostly dwell among vegetation and trees. They might not find a stable water source, but that is fine by them as they will happily rely on water pools and bird baths. They will scavenge for food thrown by people on the streets or in the garbage, and will, in fact, cover up to eighty miles in this pursuit.

Diet

Raccoons are omnivorous, but they have a predilection for fish, especially crayfish. This is why they prefer to live near water sources. They will also gobble up snails, frogs, clams, and mice, while their urban counterparts don't mind chomping on bird food and garbage too!

Mating habits

The mating season for raccoons generally lasts from January to June, but it hits a peak in March and April. The gestation period for a female raccoon is 65 days, after which she can give birth to up to five kits. The average number, however, is two or three.

Interestingly enough, the female and male raccoons argue during the time of birth; the female does not want him around the babies, so she practically kicks him out of the den. Talk about lack of trust in a relationship.

The kits are born blind and deaf, and they don't leave the den until they are seven weeks old. Throughout their upbringing, they stay with their mother.

Behavior/Lifestyle

Raccoons are scavengers, especially those that live in the urban areas. The males are very aggressive, even towards their children whom they won't mind killing or eating; that is why the mother raccoon keeps the daddy far away.

Raccoons usually like to wet their food before eating it; this is another reason why they live near water sources.
