What is a bat maternity colony?

A maternity colony typically refers to a temporary conglomeration of reproductive female bats for giving birth to, nursing and finally weaning their pups. The bats roost in places that are warm, dark and secure to bring their offspring into the world. Such colonies are initiated by pregnant bats and last as long as when weaning of the pups is over. When weaning is over, the juvenile bats will depart from the colony and the colony itself will disintegrate. After giving birth, the maternity colony will consist of mostly the now lactating females, and the juvenile offspring. Sizes of the colonies are highly variable depending on the bat species with some having ten or less bats while larger ones, like the Bracken cave colony is estimated at 15million bats.

Do all bat species have maternity colonies?

Bats form maternity colonies depending on their area of living. In temperate areas like the USA and Canada, the formation of maternity colonies would be imperative during winter. Bats living in warm areas however no incentives to form colonies since the temperatures are mostly at optimum for the reproductive activity.
