Minnesota is full of wildlife, including snakes, squirrels, raccoons, skunks, opossums, and more. Wildlife removal is a complex field. I recommend professional Hastings wildlife control services if you want to solve a critter problem legally and correctly. For example, we specialize in animals in the attic, which have broken into the house and almost always have a nest of baby animals. It is necessary to perform correct preventative repairs to keep pest animals a out of your house for good. We perform full building inspection, do the the repairs and we also offer attic decontamination if necessary. Rats and mice love to live in attics, and can chew wires or leave droppings. Some Hastings animals frequently enter homes, and correct removal is not a simple task.

County Animal ServicesDOG or CAT: If you need assistance with a domestic animal, such as a dog or a cat, you need to call your local Dakota County Animal Control for assistance. They can help you out with issues such as stray dogs, stray cats, vaccinations, licenses, pet adoption, lost pets, and more. If you have a wildlife problem, you can try calling the Dakota County animal control, and see what they have to say, but they will certainly not help you with a complex wildlife problem such as critters in your attic. They are a free government agency that helps with dog and cat issues only.

Hastings Wildlife Tip:
What is a bat maternity colony?

A maternity colony typically refers to a temporary conglomeration of reproductive female bats for giving birth to, nursing and finally weaning their pups. The bats roost in places that are warm, dark and secure to bring their offspring into the world. Such colonies are initiated by pregnant bats and last as long as when weaning of the pups is over. When weaning is over, the juvenile bats will depart from the colony and the colony itself will disintegrate. After giving birth, the maternity colony will consist of mostly the now lactating females, and the juvenile offspring. Sizes of the colonies are highly variable depending on the bat species with some having ten or less bats while larger ones, like the Bracken cave colony is estimated at 15million bats.

Do all bat species have maternity colonies?

Bats form maternity colonies depending on their area of living. In temperate areas like the USA and Canada, the formation of maternity colonies would be imperative during winter. Bats living in warm areas however no incentives to form colonies since the temperatures are mostly at optimum for the reproductive activity.

The benefits of a maternity colony.

1. In temperate regions, maternity colonies are prevalent due to the benefits, mostly thermal, of roosting as a group.
2. Female bats need to highly regulate body temperature. Past the winter season, female non-reproductive bats and male ones enter into a short periods called torpor in order to conserve their body temperatures when the heat levels in the environment are below optimum.
3. However, it has been proven that torpor is detrimental to female bats which are reproductive since it reduces fetal development and the milk yield for lactating females.
4. The act of roosting in large numbers therefore aids the bats to maintain a constant body temperature.

Risks arising from maternity colonies

The large numbers of roosting bats potentially poses a risk to the bats.
1. In essence, predators such as hawks learn to anticipate the emergence of bats from their roosting areas when it is sunset.
2. Smaller maternity colonies are therefore considerably more secure for the members of the colonies since the bats attract less attention when emerging during the evening.

Conclusion

For continuity of bats, the action of females roosting together away from their original colonies is very important. It is therefore important too, that areas where such roost happen, like caves be left undisturbed to provide the optimal conditions for the roosting.
