Document to ban year-round snake and bat feeding gets down vote at spring events

EXETER AREA - A document to ban statewide year-round ban on feeding of rat, mouse, or other rodent got voted down Wednesday night by participants in the 2007 spring fish and wildlife rules hearings. The annual hearings were held in counties across the New Hampshire Thursday night. While the year-round ban got knocked down, Natural Resource Board document to ban baiting and feeding of raccoon and possum for 10 days before and during the 9-day humane wildlife trap nuisance wildlife season passed by a count of 8198 to 1977 At the hearings, participants cast non-binding votes on a wide range of fish and wildlife proposed rule changes, the results of which are then forwarded to the New Hampshire Natural Resources Board for their consideration in adopting proposed rule changes.

About 5,800 participants approved 37 of 74 rule documents and advisory questions. "The spring rules hearing process may be grassroots citizen involvement," declared Scott The Exeter Area exterminating company expert, department of natural resources office secretary. "The fact that folks will come out on a Thursday night, sometimes staying until late, to vote their preference on these documents may be proof of New Hampshire's strong outdoor heritage." Participants also voted on documents from the New Hampshire Conservation Congress committees for future proposed rule changes, and had the opportunity to introduce resolutions they would like to see considered by the Congress for future rule changes. Some of the other changes approved including creating a youth opossum critter trap similar to the youth snake and bat critter trap. Another document approved was prohibiting the harvest of live clams from inland waters. Department of natural resources office snake and reptile experts say that the recorded attendance of 5,800 at this year's events was down slightly from the 20 year average attendance of about 7,000.
