Ohio is full of wildlife, including snakes, squirrels, raccoons, skunks, opossums, and more. Wildlife removal is a complex field. I recommend professional New Philadelphia wildlife control services if you want to solve a critter problem legally and correctly. For example, we specialize in animals in the attic, which have broken into the house and almost always have a nest of baby animals. It is necessary to perform correct preventative repairs to keep pest animals a out of your house for good. We perform full building inspection, do the the repairs and we also offer attic decontamination if necessary. Rats and mice love to live in attics, and can chew wires or leave droppings. Some New Philadelphia animals frequently enter homes, and correct removal is not a simple task.

New Philadelphia Wildlife Tip:

Do squirrels chew on wood in or on a house? Why, and what are the risks?

Squirrels have four incisors that continuously grow. In order to control its growth, they chew on hard materials such as nuts and wood. Luckily for them, these incisors do not have nerve endings, so they do not feel any pain, which is why they can bite down on very hard material all the time and very easily. Biting down on hard material helps them to temporarily stunt the growth of the incisors, sharpen them and strengthen them.

Squirrels survive outside, on trees and inside trees but they do tend to make nests in your attics if given the opportunity or maybe they need a safe haven to have their babies. In entering your attic, they may chew on the wood of your house to make the entryway bigger for them to enter. Chewing wood is not a source of food for them and they would only chew on it as an alternative, if they do not have any hard food around for them to chew on, such as acorns, nuts and grains.

When chewing on the wood of your house, squirrels can cause major damage. They can make entry ways into your attic large enough for other animals to enter and make a home for themselves, breeding a litter of young ones. Rodents carry parasites on them and feces also contain airborne diseases, so once they enter your home, you, your other family members and your pets are at an unhealthy risk. Not to mention the annoying sounds and scurrying you would hear over your heads which you would have to put up with until you can get rid of them.

It is very unlikely that squirrels can chew away your entire house, but they can make large gaps in the infrastructure, not necessarily limited to only the roof. They tend to chew on wood, shredding them when they are making nests as well. Your house may have a faulty rotted piece of wood that you may not have noticed but the squirrel did and started biting, making the area larger and more noticeable to you. If the squirrel did not do this, then you would never have seen the fault and you would never have attempted to have it fixed.

Since squirrels can climb up almost anything, it is very difficult to tell where they are gnawing off at your house unless the gaps are made big enough for you to notice from afar. There have been instances when they would chew on garage doors as well. Preventative measures should always be taken in areas that are prone to have squirrels. An old wives remedy would be to sprinkle hot chili powder or pepper on the wood so that the squirrels would not chew on it. For areas that are prone to squirrel gnawing, you should search for an alternative material such as metal or concrete.

Squirrels can chew on wood in or on a house which is why preventative measures need to be put into place.
