DIAMONDBACK RATTLESNAKE

Weighing in as the heaviest, if not the largest, venomous snake in the Southeast, the Diamondback Rattlesnake is one of the most interesting, most well known snakes in the country.

Reaching up to eight feet in length, with a weight up to ten pounds, this snake is incredibly physically impressive. In general, their coloration is interesting as well, with a base of brownish or olive, overlaid with dark brown to black diamonds, all with centers that are slightly lighter; each of these diamond-shaped blotches are then outlined with a row of either cream or yellow scales.

Since these snakes often will seek shelter in animal burrows, they often only emerge during the early morning or afternoon to bask, allowing themselves to keep their temperature regulated with intervals of both sunshine and shade. Like many other species, as well, the rattlesnake is not necessarily adept at climbing, but occasionally have been spotted in both bushes and trees- this is often most likely a way to catch prey, though, as opposed to seeking shelter or living arrangements. These snakes have been known as excellent swimmers, though, with species often spotted crossing large stretches of water without any land surrounding them.

The Rattlesnake will often actively forage for prey, as well as engage in waiting to ambush a small mammal, such as rabbits or rice rats. Their diets vary as widely as their environment, ranging from small insects and lizards, through medium-sized animals such as birds, even up to a large cottontail rabbit for a grown adult. Juveniles will often search for smaller prey, their diet mainly ending up mainly consisting of lizards and insects, but are also capable of eating adult mice when found.

While the rattlesnake is often seen as deadly and aggressive, they are totally averse to human contact, often only attacking when defending themselves. Most times, a human is bitten only because it was trying to harm the snake. Even when bitten, though, since the antivenom for a rattlesnake is so widely available, the mortality rate only reaches about 30percent in the most aggressive numbers. However, these bites often will come from baby snakes, as well, and these bites are often more poisonous than adult bites, since young rattlesnakes do not know how to control the release of their venom.

Rattlesnakes have a relatively long gestation period, often lasting between six and seven months, with broods that average about a dozen young at a time. The young only stay with the mother for a few hours, though, before being sent off to hunt on their own, making the snake's mortality rate extremely high. Females will often give birth to these broods between July and early October. The young snakes will emerge looking like smaller versions of adult rattlesnakes, with the only notable difference being that young snakes will have a button at the end of their tail, as opposed to the rattle that will be the defining factor of the adults.
