How to trap a coyote

Although very few cases of coyote attacks have been recorded, conflicts do sometimes happen.Common coyote-related complains we get from people are:

Trapping the animal is not easy as they are very cautious and agile, and there are specific state laws which forbade you from catching (or even trying) to capture wild animals. It is essential that you educate yourself first regarding the laws if they are applicable to your area. You may also consider calling in a profession to do the job if you do not want to get into any trouble with the authorities.


Here is a list of a few traps which will help you trying to catch a coyote:

Coil spring - are also known as paw or leg traps, and as the name implies, they trap the paw of the animal. It does not kill the animal, but can seriously injure it, and therefore we advise you not to use this method. Hunters commonly recommend it throughout the world, but they are not ideal if you are a beginner. Releasing the trapped animal is also a difficult task, as it may attack you in the process.

Live Cage - catches the animal in a cage and once it is inside, it cannot escape, but in case of coyotes, this trap is not very useful. However, if you still decide using it, make sure that you wash the cage beforehand, and wear gloves to mask up against your scent.

Also, fresh bait needs to be placed to lure in the animal. The trap should be left overnight, and if it worked correctly, you should have a coyote inside it the morning. Also, if you do succeed in catching one, it is better that you take help from a profession to help you release the animal somewhere safe as if subjected to new environments, it animal might die.

Snare Traps - use a strong wire which wraps around the neck of the animal to choke it to death. If you use this trap, remember that it is one of the most lethal ones out there, and we highly recommend that you do not ever use this for catching any animal, as it is plain cruel and inhumane.
