Squirrel deterrent spray - There is only one chance that you have for a squirrel deterrent spray to work: Use it for squirrels in the chimney. Because a chimney is a confined space, if a potent smell is going to encourage a squirrel to leave, it needs to be applied in a very small, enclosed area. This won't work on all chimneys, just the ones that are less conducive to air movement. Even with the ideal enclosure, most deterrent sprays just don't work. The reason for this is that the vast majority are made up of naphthalene, better known as the active ingredient in mothballs. Putting a large number of mothballs in your chimney will indeed be toxic to any animals living in the space, but that still won't make them leave. Not only would you have to put enough of the deterrent spray in to making breathing difficult, at that level, you risk contaminating your own home with the carcinogenic substance. The only real deterrent spray out there that works with moderate success is eviction fluid, but it's only available to trappers and wildlife companies. For do-it-yourself deterrent sprays, you really just need to take care of the exterior of your home and prevent squirrels from getting inside to begin with.
