You Don’t Need to Kill a Bat - Bats are unique and interesting animals. However, many people choose not to have them in their home. Bats enjoy roosting in areas that are quiet, dark and tight. This makes attics and garages the perfect space for a colony of bats. When you discover that you have bats in your attic, your first thought is to just get rid of them.

Thankfully, there are safe and effective ways to get bats out of your home without harming them or yourself. Bats are just as fearful of people as people are to them. You will need to do a close examination of your home to attempt to determine how the bats are getting into their new home. This may prove difficult as bats are able to enter through openings as small as a dime. Bats may also be getting in through more than one crack or hole in your home. You may be able to determine where the bats are getting in by the brown stain they leave behind from their fur.

Once you have determined their access point you will need to install an exclusion screen. This screen will allow the bats to safely fly out, but prevent them from flying back in. You will need to leave this screen up for a few weeks to make sure the entire colony has left. You do not want to seal the bats in. When all of the bats have left, you are able to permanently seal up any openings with cements, stones, insulation and so forth.

You should not disturb a colony of bats if there are babies. This may cause the bats to become trapped in the attic or their roosting area and may lead to their death. The death of a bat can cause health hazards and odor issues.
