Trapping Your Pigeons
Pigeons are known to carry fleas, ticks, mites and disease. Not only are they dangerous to have around, their droppings contain damaging acid. This uric acid can corrode concrete, statues, bricks, and the paint off of cars. Pigeons need to be removed as soon as they are discovered. They should be removed humanely and safely.
One of the most humane options for removing pigeons is by contacting a professional pest service. They are experts at safely and efficiently removing all of your pigeons, as well as their droppings. If you are interested in removing the pigeons yourself, you may want to consider trapping them.
There are numerous preassembled traps on the market that are available. Most experts have recommended the ProSeries GalvaPerm Pigeon Trap. This trap is able to be placed on any flat surface where pigeons congregate. Usually, if you are placing a trap on the roof, it will be in direct sunlight. If you are unable to place the trap in a shaded area, you will need to put something above it to provide them with coverage.
These traps feature one way doors that allow the pigeons to get in, but are unable to get out. There is a one way door featured on the top that allows you to provide the trapped pigeon with food and water without the worry one will get out. The GalvaPerm features eight doors that are one way, on each of its four sides. Some traps are able to accommodate one or two pigeons, while this trap can hold up to 30.
Baiting pigeons is easy with the use of whole corn, popcorn or bread. Some trappers will leave a few pigeons in the trap to lure others in. Make sure that the pigeons that remain in the trap are well taken care of.
The most commonly dealt with bird problem in the US is that of pigeons roosting on buildings. Feral pigeons tend to live in urban areas, and they prefer to roost on and in buildings, where they leave nesting material, feathers, parasites, and
worst of all, their unsanitary and corrosive droppings. The only way to
permanently solve such problems is to install bird exclusion materials, such as bird spikes or netting. Bird trapping is also an option, but it's usually a poor and temporary
fix. In addition to pigeons, other birds can cause problems in certain other situations: woodpeckers damaging houses, sparrows stuck inside retail spaces, Chimney Swifts nesting inside chimneys, etc.
