Getting Rid of Chimney Swifts

Chimney swifts are commonly confused with bats. This is because their behavior is similar to that of a bat. Chimney swifts will fly in and out of chimneys at dusk. Like bats, chimney swifts need to be treated humanely and handled with great care. There is never a need to destroy a chimney swift.

Most people notice that they have swifts in their chimney when they have a cleaning scheduled. Chimney swifts will usually only live in chimneys as opposed to other areas in the home because they are unable to perch. Swifts will cling to the side of the vertical surfaces with their long claws. If you notice that you have swifts there are some humane methods to remove them.

You should be able to scare away a flock of swifts by yelling loudly into your chimney. Some professionals recommend purchasing propane cannon. This device creates a loud sound into your chimney that is similar to a shotgun blast. These devices are available at most home improvement stores.

You should check to see if your swifts have eggs in their nests. If you scare away the swifts that are fully grown, the eggs may not be able to survive. This is also true for young chimney swifts. If you notice that you have eggs or baby birds, you will need to contact a professional removal service.

You may also purchase bird spikes. You can place these spike on areas that the swift is building their nests or roosting. These spikes will deter the swifts with their long spikes that stick out from the chimney. You are also able to place these bird spikes around the outside of your home. This can include gutters, vents, eases, roofs, and so on. You should also avoid leaving pet food outside. This is something that will attract the chimney swifts to your area.

The most commonly dealt with bird problem in the US is that of pigeons roosting on buildings. Feral pigeons tend to live in urban areas, and they prefer to roost on and in buildings, where they leave nesting material, feathers, parasites, and worst of all, their unsanitary and corrosive droppings. The only way to permanently solve such problems is to install bird exclusion materials, such as bird spikes or netting. Bird trapping is also an option, but it's usually a poor and temporary fix. In addition to pigeons, other birds can cause problems in certain other situations: woodpeckers damaging houses, sparrows stuck inside retail spaces, Chimney Swifts nesting inside chimneys, etc. If you want to learn more, please read my How To Get Rid of Birds page.
