While the most common way of dealing with an
opossum is to trap and remove the animal, one of
the alternatives that can be used if the animal
infestation is in an attic or a small cavity is to
use a one-way exclusion funnel. These are small
devices that are large enough to allow the opossum
to pass through, but have a valve style mechanism
that will not allow the opossum to return to the
area. This can be an effective solution, but it is
important to make sure that the work is carried
out properly, otherwise the situation can persist.
Finding The Entry Holes
This is the first and most important step in
dealing with the opossum problem in this way, as
you will need to make sure that you identify all
the holes, and then you can look to work to
resolve the issue. Make sure that you examine the
area of the infestation carefully, and look in
every small corner to see if there are signs of
the opossums coming in and out.

Sealing The Holes And Installing The
Funnel
Once you have located all of the holes that the
opossums have used, you will need to carry out
repairs to seal all but one of the holes, as you
will be installing the one-way funnel on the
remaining entry hole. It is also worth bearing in
mind that while you are installing the funnel, it
will usually be most successful when the funnel is
installed over the most busy of the entry points.

Monitoring The Success Of The Funnel
Make sure that you check regularly in the attic or
cavity where the problem has happened, and
particularly looking out for signs that the
opossum is still in the area. Signs like fresh
feces and freshly torn insulation material can be
a sign that the animal is still present, and if it
is still there after a few days, you may need to
try and look for other access points. However, if
there are no fresh signs, you can remove the
funnel and repair the final entry hole.
Repairing And Cleaning The Area
Once the area is sealed, ensure that you carry out
the relevant repairs, replacing any soiled
insulation or damaged wires. It is also best to
give the area a good clean, and spray the entire
area with a disinfectant spray to kill off any
remaining bacteria or germs.
