Catching a Bat - When someone discovers a bat in their home they rely on old wives tales to try to get them out. Methods such as mothballs and ammonia will not effectively remove the bats. Sound machines that emit ultrasonic noise and strobe lights will also not be effective at getting rid of your winged guests. There are some things that you are able to do to safely and humanely get rid of bats that are in your home or attic.

Professional Services - One of the quickest and safest options for removing bats, especially a colony is to use professional services. Professionals will have the proper tolls and equipment to permanently get rid of your bats. Also, professionals will know where they should look for the bats entry to seal up and keep the bats away.

One Way Devices - There are several options for one way devices. These are able to be installed over the opening of the home where the bats are making their way in. These devices enable the bats to fly out of the attic without danger, but will prohibit them from getting back in. This is usually recommended if your home has a constant bat issue or a large colony has roosted in your attic.

Butterfly Nets - If you only have one or two bats in your living space, you can usually catch them with a simple butterfly net. When the bat lands, you are able to gently catch them in your net. Make sure that you are careful as the bones of a bat are very fragile. Bats are legally protected so you do not want to kill them. If you do not have access to a net, you are able to use a bucket, bowl, pot, or anything else to capture your flapped rodent. Once you have trapped the bat, you can put a piece of paper between the top of the bowl or bucket and release it outside.

It's a good idea to remove the bats from your belfry or attic, but it's also a great idea to avoid harming them!
