Bats are great for the ecosystem. They eat mosquitoes and other insects around your home. However, it doesn’t mean that you want them roosting in your walls or your attic. Bats are also protected species in most areas. Not only are you not allowed to kill them, but there is no need to harm them when trying to remove them from your home.
Bats will usually raise their young ones during the summer months. This is generally May through August. You should never disturb bats during this period of time. Bats that are unable to fly yet may become trapped inside their roosting area. This can cause them to die and may lead to health hazards.
If you find that there is a colony of bats in your home, there are ways to safely remove them. Most bat repellents, such as strobe lights, ultrasonic sound emitters or moth balls will not prevent the bats from entering your home, or cause them to leave.
You should examine the exterior structure of your home to attempt to determine where the bats are coming in and exiting. Bats are able to fit through spaces as small as a dime. This may cause it difficult to notice their entry points. Bats will usually leave behind a brown stain from their fur. This may assist with locating their opening.
Once you have discovered their opening, you can install a one way device or an exclusion screen. This allows bats to safely leave the area but is unable to fly back in. You should leave this device installed for a few weeks to allow all of the bats to leave. Once you are sure that the bats are one hundred percent gone, you will be able to seal up the holes with cement, caulk, brick, stone, or insulation.
Bats are great animals! Unfortunately, the do often choose to roost inside home and buildings, where they can create a big mess. It's a good idea to remove the bats from your belfry or attic, but it's also a great idea to avoid
harming them! Any competent wildlife control expert should have the knowledge and expertise to safely and effectively remove an entire colony of bats from a house without harming or killing a single one. I know that I have a 100%
success rate with bat removal jobs, and I believe the list of companies that I've compiled in my directory is of similar quality. If you want to learn more, please read my How To Get Rid of Bats page.
