Yellow rat snakes are some of the most popular reptiles to keep as pets. This causes many people to learn how to identify them in the wild. While yellow rat snakes are not harmful to humans because of their lack of venom, they are often dangerous due to their bites.
Identifying a yellow rat snake can often be a challenge because they vary in colorations. This is because of their age, location, and other climate factors. If you are attempting to find a yellow rat snake you will need to know what region you are searching in. Yellow rat snakes are commonly found in the United States from the southern South Carolina to Florida. These reptiles are usually found in the woodlands and around farming locations. They are great rat hunters, so they can usually be found where rodents are active.
When you think you have found a yellow rat snake, you should observe the snake’s pigments. Usually, the yellow rat snake will appear yellow in color, but they can also be light brown or any other variation of colors in between. Some of these reptiles will have a greenish tint color, as well. They will usually have four lines that run down the length of their body. These lines are usually brown in color.
Most yellow rat snakes are built powerfully. They are thin reptiles, but they are strong. These snakes will generally grow to be five feet or longer in length. You should also observe their eyes, as well. The eyes are often the same colors as the scales of the snake.
While yellow rat snakes are not venomous, you should have any bites you receive medically examined as soon as possible. Any bite that is caused by a reptile or animal in the wild may cause an infection.
