Skunks and their young - Skunks will often have their litters of young sometime around May. The litters are usually small, and the babies stay with the mother for a few months until they are ready to go out on their own. Baby skunks are born with active scent glands, but they aren't able to discharge them until about 8 days after birth. IF you have a nuisance skunk on your property and you think it has a litter, you're better off just waiting until the babies grow and leave the den before you trap the mother. Other than that, there is an 8 day window after birth where you can trap the mother and then remove the babies by hand without worry of getting "skunked".
