Should I Feed A Baby Squirrel I Found?

Squirrels are a common sight in your premises and can be seem hopping around your garden trees, fences and rooftops. It is not uncommon for you to find an abandoned baby squirrel. What do you do next?

Never Feed a Cold Baby

The first thing that would come to your mind is to feed the baby squirrel as it might be hungry. Don't make hasty decisions; you first need to keep the baby squirrel warm. You keep it warm either by keeping it near your skin under your shirt for at least half an hour or you can place it in a container with a lid, make sure you make some holes for ventilation. Any container that you are using should have a lid else the baby squirrel might climb out of it. All babies need heat till they are fully grown, have fur and healthy. Take a small blanket or a flannel cloth and place it in the bottom of the container, gather it closely to make a small pocket like space in the centre and place the baby there. You can use a heating pad to make the baby more comfortable, monitor the temperature closely and make sure the baby doesn't get too hot.

Rehydrate Baby Squirrels before Feeding Them

Baby squirrels when found are mostly dehydrated and must be hydrated before they can be fed. Once they are warm you can try to rehydrate the baby squirrel. You would need small bottles of Pedialyte to do this. Make sure you warm the pedialyte and refrigerate it once you have opened the bottle. Remember to use up pedialyte within 48 hours. If for some reason you do not find pedialyte you can also try making a rehydration fluid at home. Mix 1 qt. water, 1tsp salt and 3 tsp sugar. The sugar is not a complete electrolyte solution but it is good for a substitute.

How Long To Hydrate

How much of fluid should be given to the baby squirrel depends upon how dehydrated it is. To find out the amount of dehydration and see how much solution to give the baby do a skin turgor test, you need to pinch up its skin along the skin just behind its shoulder blades, and watch how its skin relaxes. If it turns flat quickly then it is mildly dehydrated and you can give the fluid for six hours. If it turns flat slowly but consistently it is moderately dehydrated and will require fluid for eight hours. If you find the skin staying in the peak position then it is very dehydrated and you will have to hydrate it for at least 12 hours. The fluid can be given in every 30 minutes.

Feeding Them

Once the baby is hydrated you can try to feed the formula, the first feed can be made by mixing one part powder and four parts water. You can make a more concentrated feed for the next time, use two parts to formula and fix with one part of water. Make sure not to feed the baby squirrel with human baby formula or cow's milk, it will kill the baby squirrel. Do not feed them using doll bottles or pet nurser bottles or they will get choked and might die. Use syringes with small nipples to fit on them and use to feed the baby squirrels.
