About Squirrels: Appearance, Biology, Life Cycle, Habitat, Diet, Behavior
Appearance:
Squirrels belong to the rodent community, and they are identified by their bushy tail and slender body shape. These creatures also have larger eyes as compared to rats and mouse. The fur of a squirrel is usually soft and silky in appearance, but few squirrel species also have thicker tails. You can observe squirrels in the wide range of colors at different corners of the world. Experts reveal that hind limbs of these rodents are generally much larger than the forelimbs. These creatures have 4-5 toes on their paws, and the thumb figure is usually poorly developed. However, these animals are known for their excellent vision. They have versatile and sturdy claws that make them able to climb the trees and branches with ease.
Biology:
Squirrels are a part of the Sciuridae biological family; this family lists all small sized rodents that are often found targeting human premises. There are generally five types of rodents in this category: Tree squirrels, marmots, ground squirrels, chipmunks, flying squirrels and prairie dogs. Most of these animals are commonly found in America, Africa, and Eurasia regions. However, from past few years; they are also being observed in the Australian continents.
Life Cycle:
Reports show that a female squirrel generally gives birth to babies two times per year. At an average, it can have 2 to 4 babies at once. However, depending upon weather conditions, and food supply in the area where they live; some squirrel species are also found to give birth to around 8 babies at once. Squirrels breed in the winter season, and the babies take birth during mid-summer season. Studies show that squirrels pregnancy is generally of 2 months duration. The young babies are born without hairs, and they are found to be around 15 grams only at the time of birth. The babies become mature after 9 months of their birth.
Habitat:
You can find squirrels in any corner of the world, including in Australia and Antarctica. The tree squirrels are often found in the wooded areas because they are fond of making nests on trees branches. On the other side, the ground squirrels live on the ground, and they create burrows to live safely inside. The flying squirrels are skilled enough to create holes on trees to live inside.
Diet:
Squirrels are not able to digest cellulose, so their diet includes food items that do not contain fats, carbohydrates, and proteins. The toughest time for survival of squirrels in the early spring season when they are not able to find desired food to eat. However, these rodents may live on a variety of food items such as cones, conifer, nuts, seeds, fruits, fungi and green vegetation. When they are not able to find enough food, you can also see squirrels eating eggs, young snakes and small birds as well.
Behavior:
Homeowners call squirrels extremely noisy creatures because they never end up making terrible sounds in their nests. They try to mark their territories with urine marks and may also start barking on humans when they by mistake cross their territories.
