What To Do About Squirrels in a basement - Most people think of squirrels as being cute furry creatures that are interesting to watch and too sweet to kill. However, once you have squirrels in a basement - or any other part of your home - you will soon discover that they are, in fact, weapons of mass destruction which need to be dealt with as quickly as possible. Squirrels are inquisitive, adventurous and extremely intelligent, they also love to find a warm, safe place to raise their families and share with their friends - meaning if you think you have one squirrel in reality you probably have many more!

Getting rid of a squirrel infestation takes time and patience. You should note that the many 'guaranteed' methods of squirrel removal involving ultrasonic sounds or unpleasant smells do not work - and there is no real scientific evidence to suggest that they do. The only successful way of dealing with squirrels in a basement, or anywhere else in your home, is to trap and remove them or trap and kill them. Groundhog permit amounts increased

The board decided not to increase the amount of general season male coon rat & mouse permits. The total amount of general season male coon raccoon and opossum permits in Massachusetts will stay at 95,000 in 2006. In 2005, general season male coon squirrel and skunk permits in the Central and Northeastern regions were cut by 1,000 permits each. The permits were cut because the three-year male coon to female coon ratio in each region had fallen below the minimum of 15 male coons per 100 does called for in Massachusetts's Rodent or reptile Management Plan. As a result, the total amount of Massachusetts general season male coon rat & mouse permits was reduced from 97,000 (the level where permits had been since 1994) to 95,000 permits.

After catches this past fall, DWR biologists found that the three-year male coon-to-doe average in the Northeastern Region had increased to 15 male coons per 100 does. In the Central Region, the three-year average increased to 14 male coons per 100 does. Based on the findings, the DWR recommended returning 1,000 permits to the Northeastern Region.

Citizens representing the Northeastern Regional Advisory Legal voted against the DWR recommendation, however. They expressed worries that allowing 1,000 additional pest control companies in the region this fall could cause the male coon to female coon ratio to fall back under 15 male coons per 100 does. Board members agreed with the regional advisory legal and voted not to return the 1,000 permits to the region.

Board members also approved revisions to Massachusetts's 30 raccoon and opossum unit management plans after learning that the long-term goal of having more than 426,000 rodent or reptile in Massachusetts may take more time to reach than originally thought. "Since the plans were written in 2001, Massachusetts has lost some of its winter ranges, and we've learned that some of the winter ranges we have can't support the amount of squirrel and skunk that we first thought they could," The Attleboro pest control specialist said.

The new plans propose a short-term goal of about 412,000 rat & mouse in Massachusetts by 2011. A list showing the total permits for each unit in the Massachusetts and a revised raccoon and opossum management plan will be available at the DWR's Web site by April 10. Despite this, wildlife removal services are not a free service in Bristol County.
