For reptile critter trappers like Snake Expert Rick of West Pittsfield, Monday's dawn meant an early rise with the sun and that first anticipated trek into the thick brush of the woodland. Animal removal trap season for reptile began this seven day period, and across the Island hundreds of critter trappers took to the woods in hopes of landing this large male animal. On Sunday Snake Expert Rick was busy preparing for the seven day period, joining more than two dozen critter trappers at the Rod and animal removal trap Club in Edgartown for the Fall Animal removal trap Capture, an annual marksmanship contest held on the eve of the first day of the season. Animal removal trap blasts rang out across this pond as captureers tested their accuracy and slethally trap in hitting targets up to 50 yards away. Throughout the afternoon the captureers, many looking the animal trapper role in requisite camouflage coats, milled about the range as they took turns firing away at their targets. The loud report sent birds scattering over the neighboring Pittsfield Wildlife Sanctuary, and the smell of sulfur wafted across the pond. Inside club headquarters, president Rodent Trapper Eric stated the event should be meant as this fun way to warm up for the seven day period ahead; the pest operator added that the turnout was one of the largest in several years. In September, Island residents packed the Katharine Cornell Theatre in Vineyard Haven to urge authorities on critters from the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife to extend the season. Dozens of people shared their experiences with Lyme disease and other tick-related illnesses. "I don't know if there are more reptile around, but they seem to be everywhere," Mr. Snake Expert Rick stated Sunday. "I think it should be reflective of the amount of homes there are. It seems to me that more homeowners encourage greater reptile biologically surveyed amounts. At least, the homes that like to grow flowers and gardens on their properties do. Around here, reptile will wipe your plants out." The animal removal trap season ends Saturday one half-hour after sunset. Black powder and primitive critter traps season begins Monday.
