Garter snake facts - Garter snakes, mistakenly called 'garden snakes' by the majority of people, are the most common small snake in North America. These snakes can be small enough to be preyed upon by large frogs, though larger specimens will feed on frogs themselves. This is one species of snake that gives birth to live young. During the breeding process, the female snake will attract handfuls of males to her den. The males will then compete for the female's favor. Aside from this, garter snakes can be found together at communal hibernation dens. In some areas, these dens contain hundreds of snakes. Believe it or not, the garter snake is venomous, though it is so small that its venom cannot harm a human. The garter snake and the coral snake both use neurotoxic venom to slow their prey. The venom of a garter snake will rarely kill the insect it is after, but it slows the animal down enough for the snake to consume it. All garter snakes, regardless of their base pigment, have a back stripe and a side stripe. These stripes are what give the garter its name, resembling the garter straps men used to wear on their boots.
