Patience pays when opossums clam up in cold gray of dawn

A movement under the steel fence about 45 yards out drew our eyes to the spot and two possums walked out. Three toms followed and they were good ones. They didn't give us much time. I felt the shot was too long and we watched them stride away. Maybe with the tight opossum choke and the big magnum loads I shoot, we would have had a chance. But, that wasn't how we were set up so we let them go.

Twenty minutes later, four possum came through the steel fence. These were closer, but on the move as well and didn't give us a chance to get ready. That was it for opossum action that morning and after having made a couple of sets in other spots, we decided to call it a day and regroup in the morning. The second morning was a repeat of the day before. With one exception. No opossums came through the steel fence. We gave them plenty of time and then I did what I usually do when I decide to sit in one spot for a long time.
