Boiling Springs Wildlife Tip:
Is There Anything I Can Do to Keep Squirrels Out of My Garden?
If you have been slaving all summer long on your garden, there is nothing more frustrating than finding that squirrels have been eating your prized fruits and vegetables. You labored every day, ensuring that your carrots, pumpkin, cantaloupe, and watermelon would be a great treat for your family, only to find that squirrels were eating it. Extremely frustrating to say the least.
Now you are trying to find ways to keep the squirrel out of your garden. That is no easy task. These animals climb extremely well, and they are small enough to fit through many fences you make try to construct. This leaves you wondering if there is anything you can do to keep squirrels out of your garden?
A Fence
You need to start with a fence. This is no ordinary fence either. Squirrels have an exceptional ability to climb and they can dig. This means that a little 3 foot fence you placed along the ground is going to be of no use at all. You also can use a fence that has any gaps between boards or wire. This needs to be a solid framed fence to keep these animals out.
You needed to be at least 6 feet high, and it should be made of a material that is impossible for the squirrel to grip. These animals have exceptional grip on the pads of their feet, which enables them to easily scurry up trees at a moment's notice. You want to deny this, ensuring that they can't climb up your fence or try to scale it. In addition, the fence should be buried at least 12 inches underground. This. The squirrel from trying to dig its way in.
In addition to this, as you bury the fence make sure that you use jagged rocks mixed with dirt. This will help keep the squirrels from attempting to pick.
Repellants
You obviously can't use poisons around your garden. So, putting poison around your fence to keep the animals away is a bad idea. You may wind up poisoning yourself.
Instead, you should look to use repellents. There are some commercial options out there that will give you some success in keeping the squirrels away.
However, you can save yourself some money by creating your own repellents. You could boil some jalapeno peppers in water, and then spray the mixture around the lower part of your fence. You will have to frequently do this, as it may rain, decreasing the potency of your brew. This can be extremely effective. The jalapeno peppers act as an irritant to the squirrel, keeping it away from your garden.
Wire
You may also consider putting electrical wiring on top of the fence and around the lower part. It doesn't need to be too much of an electric shock, just enough to keep the animals away. The best part about using this option, is that it will keep many animals away, including your dog and cat.
A few measures can help keep your garden safe, even from squirrels. Now you will get to enjoy that garden fresh salad you have been waiting all summer for.
