What to use to keep racoons from riping off your house vents -Unfortunately, sometimes you have to be a little creative to keep racoons from ripping off the vents on your home. Most of the time, these animals are easily discouraged with some touch metal and a few screws. If you are having problems with a racoon continually opening up your house, it may be because the adult is a mother and her babies are inside your attic! This is why you can't just close up the hole a raccoon is using when you see it leave. Most of the time, the adult in a house is a female hiding her babies from predatory males. If you close her out, she will work her hardest to find a way back inside. The only way to handle a racoon infestation is to have the animal trapped and removed. Most states require this to be done by a person with a special license. The expert will come in, set up some cage traps, and locate the litter of babies. Sometimes, the tiny racoons can be removed by hand and then placed in the cage trap to lure in the mother. If the mother sticks around to defend her kits, she will need to be snared with a pole snare and guided into the cage.

Believe it or not, it's not too early to think fall wildlife management

It's time to think wildlife management. Isn't it always? I know it's fishing season. And I for one have been trying to get out as much as I can to put the whack on a few steelhead. My son and I have even got a few so far in the Pigeon River before the weather soured on us. In fact, the best part so far this season was a little over a year ago, when Josh bagged his first steelie, a 3-pound beautiful, pink striped, female that I filleted for him and will be consuming in the near future. Isn't it cool?

But now that spring may be here, we shouldn't forget about the little things that will make our annual critter trap fest each fall even more enjoyable. Between the yard work, opossum wildlife management, (if you drew a tag) and fishing, it's probably not at the top of most peoples' list. But some of these ideas I give here will hopefully pay dividends come April. The Fargo SPCA could not be reached for a comment.

While the leaves aren't on the maple trees yet, and the mosquitoes haven't infested the woods, it's a perfect time to get out and do your scouting. And while you are looking around for prospective opossum ambush spots, why not look around at your snake and bat stand areas as long as you are about? Snake and bat trails from the fall will still be present, the maple trees that rabid animals were rubbing on will be a potential signal that he may still be there, or the real telltale sign that the rabid animal you were chasing may be finding one or both of his sheds meaning he may still be lurking in your area. Are you snaring your bow? You should be. I admit that lately I just haven't had as much time to trap due to family obligations, and working on my house, but I'll be back at it in the next year or so. After all, they are the biggest reason many of us enjoy wildlife management, and keeping things friendly between you and them will go a long way.

How about your humane wildlife traps? Did you take care of them if you put them away for the year? Snaring them from time to time may be a good idea, just like snaring the bows. Whether it's trap snaring or slugs, get out and have some hammer time. Not only may be it fun, but you will be a better shot for it. I know I don't get out enough with the humane wildlife trap, but I do it whenever I can.

So there may be plenty to do now before the leaves start falling. Sounds like a lot, but it really isn't as much as you think. Now that spring's arrived get done whatever you need to get done and do some fishing, (I know I will be hard at it) and enjoy what the woods and waters provides all year long.
