Utah is full of wildlife, including snakes, squirrels, raccoons, skunks, opossums, and more. Wildlife removal is a complex field. I recommend professional St George wildlife control services if you want to solve a critter problem legally and correctly. For example, we specialize in animals in the attic, which have broken into the house and almost always have a nest of baby animals. It is necessary to perform correct preventative repairs to keep pest animals a out of your house for good. We perform full building inspection, do the the repairs and we also offer attic decontamination if necessary. Rats and mice love to live in attics, and can chew wires or leave droppings. Some St George animals frequently enter homes, and correct removal is not a simple task.

County Animal ServicesDOG or CAT: If you need assistance with a domestic animal, such as a dog or a cat, you need to call your local Washington County Animal Control for assistance. They can help you out with issues such as stray dogs, stray cats, vaccinations, licenses, pet adoption, lost pets, and more. If you have a wildlife problem, you can try calling the Washington County animal control, and see what they have to say, but they will certainly not help you with a complex wildlife problem such as critters in your attic. They are a free government agency that helps with dog and cat issues only.

St George Wildlife Tip:
BLACK RAT SNAKE

The Black Rat Snake is one of the most averaged sized snakes among the species, often laying in the range of 'medium sized' with an average length of between forty and seventy inches long. The widest point of the snake's body is often near the tail section, with the snake having a diameter of around two inches. These dimensions, though, give the black rat snake a powerful, sleek body, that is able to move fluidly both on the ground, as well as up trees.

Black Rat Snakes are mainly found in the eastern United States, as well as the Midwest, including parts of New England and, including all of Texas and Nebraska. The Black Rat Snakes are the most common of the rat snake species, and have also been known to migrate further north, with some found in isolated patches within Canada. They, unlike their similar Yellow Rat Snakes, like a variety of habitats, from a meadow to a forest. The Black Rat Snake, being part of the sub-species of rat snakes, has differences from its counterparts, including the fat that it likes to live in high-altitude regions, and tends to find homes in rocky areas.

Black Rat Snakes will often eat any kind of rodents that are smaller than they are, including small lizards, baby mice, and small frogs. The older, larger black rat snakes will often eat larger rodents, as well, and will often consume other kinds of mammals, including chipmunks, and a variety of mice and rat. If faced with a food shortage, the black rat snake will also resort to eating bird's eggs.

To eat, the rat snake uses a constriction technique. This means that they wait patiently until their prey is off-guard, then striking- biting first before moving in to strangle them. This constriction process will usually take some time, but is sped along by the snake then consuming the prey in one bite. Digestion can be slow, sometimes taking days for the food to be fully digested, meaning that adult snakes only must eat once or twice per month. Young snakes, however, will eat weekly.

Black rat snakes will only mate once per year. This mating process is the same for the entire species, with both the males and females releasing a unique scent right before mating time to prepare for the process. Males will often mate with multiple females, and females will gestate the young for three months before giving birth. Litters can be as few as three snakes, to as many as eighty, depending on both temperature and food sources.

After birth, the snake will be independent from its mother. However, if there is a food shortage, these snakes may eat their young, and many more of the young will die within the first few weeks of life.
