Why do groundhogs dig?

Groundhogs are rodents that are found in the Central and Eastern United States, Canada and Alaska. They are brown in color and around 16 to 26 inches long. They are also known as woodchucks or whistle-pigs. The name derives from the whistling sound that they make in order to warn other groundhogs when there is danger approaching.

Predators

Groundhogs have several natural predators. They include coyotes, bears, snakes (especially to young pups), foxes, bobcats, eagles and even dogs. In order to protect themselves from these predators, they dig their burrows well underground.

How are they equipped to dig?

Groundhogs have short, strong claws that enable them to burrow. They have excellent senses of smell, sight, and hearing.

Main reason for burrowing

1. Living quarters. The main reason that groundhogs burrow is to make a nest to live in. They are excellent burrowers and are known to have elaborate burrows. They usually consist of two chambers. One is for sleeping and the other one is used as a lavatory. They are known to remove up to 700 pounds of sand while digging their burrow. Each burrow has multiple entrances which allow them to escape from an alternate exit when they are in danger.
2. Hibernating. Groundhogs are known as "true hibernators." This means that they sleep for a period of 75 to 175 days every year. They are able to lower their body temperature and heartbeat dramatically. In order to do this, they need a safe space to sleep. They build up their fat content during autumn and will go into hibernation when it becomes winter. They plug the entrance to their burrow and will only wake up for a few minutes every few days.
3. Reproducing. The female groundhog will need a burrow in order to give birth. Mating takes place in early spring and the gestation period is only about 30 days. During this time the female will make sure that she has a sufficient burrow for her pups. The male groundhog is uninvolved after mating.

Negative implications of burrowing

Groundhogs will dig in soil that is dry and soft. This makes it easier for them to remove the massive amounts of sand needed to make their burrows. They will also dig close to a source of food. This causes them to dig under vegetable gardens and homes. They can damage the foundation of the home and the root system of crops.
