Hartford County Animal Services: (860) 569-0722

Animal ControlThis is the government animal control services operating in Hartford County and sponsored by the city of Hartford. This agency typically deals with domestic animal issues involving dogs and cats. This includes things like dangerous dogs, stray cats, pet adoptions, etc. However, this agency will sometimes lend assistance with wildlife concerns. Call (860) 569-0722 and ask if they will assist with your wildlife problem. To increase the chance of success, do not lie, but if applicable, state that the problem is a public health matter in Hartford, or that you feel the public safety is at risk, perhaps due to the spread of rabies or other diseases.

Hartford Wildlife Rehabilitation Clinic: 860-428-8005

RehabberThis is NOT a government agency. It is privately run, and operates on volunteer donations. This is a wildlife rehabber facility that deals strictly with wild animals. They may be able to help you with your wildlife problem, depending on the type of problem. The level of help might depend on their resources at the time. They will almost surely help in any case of an injured wild animal, or an orphaned baby animal, such as a baby squirrel or bird that fell out of a tree, or a baby opossum, etc. Please treat Hartford Wildlife Rehabilitation kindly and donate if you are able to.

Connecticut Wildlife Commission: 860-424-3011

Game WardenThis is the statewide government wildlife agency in Connecticut, using your tax dollars to address wildlife issues. Sometimes called the Connecticut Fish & Wildlife Agency. Connecticut game wardens address many wildlife management matters, from hunting licenses, to poaching, endangered species, and yes, wildlife management. They deal with wild animals outside the range of a pest control company, such as cougars or bears. But they also have resources that may apply to your wildlife problem. To increase the chance of success, state that the problem is a public health matter in Connecticut perhaps due to the spread of rabies or other diseases.

Hartford Police Department: 860-757-4000

PoliceYes, the Hartford police department will sometimes help with wildlife problems! I've seen many cases of the cops chasing down an errant bat in your house or snake in your pool! To increase the chance of success, never lie to the police dispatcher, but if applicable, state that you feel your personal safety is at risk, or the problem is a public safety matter in Hartford, or a public health issue perhaps due to the spread of rabies or other diseases. Success may come down to whether or not a police officer wants to show up to this call, or is available. It's not always consistent.

Hartford Wildlife Tip:
Why raccoons come and go in the attic - Raccoons are not like rats; if they are living in the attic, it is for shelter only. A rat will live in a home and rarely venture out. Most of the food a rat needs can be found around the home. For a raccoon, food around the home is likely, but this large critter is going to go out at night to see what it can find. Most raccoons in the home are females, and if they don't have a litter currently, they're waiting to give birth. You should listen for crying or chirping from multiple animals. If this is the case, consult your local laws to see if you can legally trap and remove the raccoons on your own. Most states don't allow this unless you have a special license. If you're still determined to do the project yourself, you're going to need a cage trap, some strong wire mesh, and hardware to attach the trap to the hole in your roof. The goal with trapping the raccoon is to get the animal as it is leaving the attic. Ideally, you'll attache the cage trap to the opening in the roof, closing off the gaps around it with the wire mesh. When you enter the attic, the raccoon should become frightened and bolt out of the attic and into the cage.
