As tough as this is to hear, there are many locations around the country where no matter what you do you are not going to be able to keep rodents away. There are large numbers of rats, mice, squirrels, and even raccoons that live in this area and so keeping them away is a formidable task to say the least.
Actually, the very best that you can do is to try to reduce number that are able to get on your property or into your home. It’s a little easier to keep something like a raccoon or a possum away, but rats and mice are an entirely different story. Knowing this, you may wonder what property modifications will keep down rodent populations?
If you think about it, there are three primary reasons why a rodent would want to get onto your property: food, shelter, protection. These animals are hungry, and so if they have a great source of food on your property than they are going to be around. They are also looking for a place to sleep and set up a nest, and so your attic, shed, under your porch, or in the walls of your home may be the absolute ideal location. They also want to be able to avoid predators, and your home, shed, barn, or other structure can help them to stay away from such things as wolves, coyotes, and other animals that would seek to make a rodent into a tasty meal.
It is knowing these three things that helps you to reduce down the population of rodents that may want to get onto your property. Starting with food, it is best that you ensure that you limit the potential food sources that are available to them. This means that you can’t leave your pet’s dish sitting outside with food and it, you should leave out birdseed, you should fully fence in your garden, put cereals, grains, and other foods in canisters that are difficult for the animals to get into, and put the lids on your trash cans as tightly as possible. If there is no food, then they are going to go away.
Also, limit the number of places that they have to be able to set up a nest. If you have an attic, do a routine search of that at least a couple of times a month to make sure that no rodent is living in it. Check around the outside of your house to make sure that no part of your siding has a hole, crack, or gap and it some way that would allow an animal to get inside. Make sure that your sheds are secure, and put repellent underneath your porch or underneath the house to make sure that they cannot set up a nest there.
Also, remove away their feeling of security. A dog and cat are a great way to keep rodents away, because they are natural predators to these animals. This can help you to reduce, if not eliminate your rodent population.
