There are few pest animals that can be quite as pungent and repulsive as the skunk when it sprays a person or animal, and when it does spray there is no doubt for anyone in the area that a skunk is present. There are growing numbers of skunks that are living in urban and suburban areas, and in these surroundings they can become a real nuisance, both for the smell they can produce and their scavenging behavior too. When it comes to getting rid of skunks, the best and fastest way to do this is to trap the animal and then move it to a location well away from the area where it is causing a nuisance.

Skunk Repellent Products

One of the real 'snake oil' products of the modern age, repellents are available in a variety of different types, including chemical repellents and audio repellents, which all promise to be able to get rid of a range of different types of pest animals. While these well packaged products make all kinds of claims about how they will be able to get rid of the animals, the truth is that they will not prove to be an effective way to get rid of the animals. While they may make bold claims about how effective they are, these products will not be the fastest way to get rid of skunks.

Trapping And Removing Skunks

This is the most effective way to get rid of a skunk, and is actually something that you can do in just a couple of days when the trap is effective. You will need a cage trap in order to catch the skunk, and this can be baited with a variety of foods which will effectively attract the skunk into the trap, and these can include canned fish, bacon or cat food. The difficult aspect is actually moving the skunk, and in order to move the animal effectively, you will need to put some kind of cover over the trap to prevent it from spraying you, and you should remove the skunk to a location at least ten miles away from your property.

Evicting Skunks From Yards And Gardens

In some cases, you may not want to trap and remove the skunk, and in this case you can adapt your yard or garden to stop the skunk from getting in. Skunks are not very good at climbing or jumping, so putting fence around the property will be an effective barrier to keep the skunks out of your yard and garden. When it comes to installing the fence, make sure that you are embedding the fence at least six inches into the ground, as skunks may not be able to climb but they are very good diggers, so embedding the fence will help to stop the skunks from being able to get under the fence.

Making Your Property Less Attractive To Skunks

There are several steps that you can take that will help reduce the numbers of skunks that actually come to your property, and certainly the installation of a good fence will help to solve the problem for you. Dealing with food sources is key if you don't want to have a fence around the property, and this will mean storing garbage and pet food stores in solid containers inside is the first step here. You should also look to remove any fallen fruit promptly, while sealing any potential den sites for the skunk such as gaps under decking and sheds will also help to make the property less attractive to the skunk.
