Snakes are neither diurnal or nocturnal. Nocturnal creatures, as we all know, are creatures that come out in the night. Diurnal creatures are those that come out during the day and night, but usually during the day. We are diurnal species, and squirrels are another example of that. Bats, raccoons, rats, mice, and other creatures are mostly nocturnal, however. This means that you are less likely to see them out during the day, and more likely to see them out at night. This doesn't mean that you won't find these nocturnal animals awake and pottering around during daylight hours. In this day and age, more and more wild animal species are adapting to hunting during both the day and night, as this gives them the best chances of finding food and, therefore, surviving.
Snakes are cold-blooded animals. They are unable to regulate their own body temperature and, because of this, they choose to hide and sleep during the colder periods, such as during winter. When the temperatures are higher, however, the snakes will come out to play. They'll bask int he sunlight during the day, and they'll also chill out by the cool waters of your pool during the night. If the weather is too hot, snakes become inactive because they run the risk of overheating. If the temperatures plummet, on the other hand, snakes are in danger of freezing to death if they do not find a warm place to curl up fast enough.
It is the temperature that dictates how this serpent lives, and when it comes out or tucks itself away in a den or cosy spot somewhere. If it is warm at night, the snake will come out at night. If it warm during the day, the snake will come out during the day. It'll shy away and hide when it's too hot or too cold, but other than that, snakes are pottering around …
