Bats in your attic are never a pleasant experience. They are noisy and leave droppings that contain a foul odor. Some people may not realize that there are bats in their attic until they see one in their living space, or until they become a colony. A few backs will tend to be quieter than an entire colony. Bats can be heard when they are most active at dusk. This is when they line up and will leave the attic to hunt for food.

Bats can get into your home through openings as small as 3/8 of an inch. This allows them to be in a safe and dry location where they are protected from their common predators. The first thing that you should determine is how the bats are getting in and out of your home. This requires an extensive and thorough search of the exterior of your home. Once you have found where the bats are making their entrance into the attic you can install a device that allows them to fly out, but not back in.

Many people are under the misconception that they are able to catch the bats and remove them, allowing them to relocate the bats. However, bats will migrate back into the attic no matter how far away you release them. Bats will generally remain in your attic all year long assuming that weather conditions permit.

Installing a one way device may seem simple but some of them are more complicated and may require the assistance of a professional. Different than common belief moth balls and ammonia will not cause your colony of bats to flee, nor will ultrasonic transmitters or strobe lights. The only way to effectively remove all of the colony bats is to install the one way device, or wait for them to leave on their own and seal up the openings.

Bats are great animals! Unfortunately, the do often choose to roost inside home and buildings, where they can create a big mess. It's a good idea to remove the bats from your belfry or attic, but it's also a great idea to avoid harming them!
