You can hold them by the neck scruff.

Customer Raccoon Email: Hi David, I carry a raccoon rehab sub permit license since 1991... I looked at your web sites and after 18 years of taking night phone calls for our center I have seen myself and have been called back many many times to say that mom took her babies and left after changing the reason she was there to begin with, that is was dark and quiet.. I have found that a bright light and a radio ( I suggest the fire and brimstone religious talk shows where they change the pitch of their voices often) does wonders with most mammals ( Bats are usually the exception)...They also need to remove their close food source, dog & cat food and even bird feeders for the persistent ones.. Education is their only chance.... I have gotten many babies days after mom has been hauled off... I do ICU, neonates and lost causes with an 85% success rate.. But those where long nights ... 5 years ago I got upset about our local trappers charging seniors $200 to climb into their attic and steal the babies and bring them to us to raise, after all they just wanted them gone and Mom leaves after the babies are gone. So for the last 6 years I am listed with our Conservation Dept. as a nuisance trapper, knowing I give free advice to those who have a heart, they send me 2 or more calls every week... My only request for my advice is that they call me back with the out come... It usually works for me... Human adult male urine also works in our area especially on ground hogs and muskrats, after all do you want pee on your salad.. They just move to the neighbors but that is fine for most... ( I live in a very rural area with old farmers) Maybe our Missouri critters are more picky about their living quarters... Good luck... Thank you for educating the public.. Deb

My Answer: Thanks for your info, although I don't think I'll be peeing in attics any time soon!

The raccoon (Procyon lotor), is a common urban animal, and native to North America. Raccoons are easy to recognize, with a black mask and ringed tail, as seen in the above photo. Raccoons tend to weigh between 10-20 pounds as adults, and live an average of 5 years. They are mostly nocturnal, and are omnivores, and will often eat pet food or garbage. They have become very acclimated to living in cities and urban areas. They are very strong, excellent climbers, very intelligent, and they are very skilled with their hands, which causes them to commonly break into homes and attics, where they cause considerable damage, and they also destroy other property, and thus raccoons are considered pest animals by many people, which is why I remove them.
