Customer Raccoon Email: Here is what we have used at Coastal Wildlife Rescue for years and it works very well: Raccoons are nocturnal and squirrels are diurnal so the treatment is the same but at different times. The idea is to bother the animal's attempt to sleep as much as possible so do this during the day for coons and at night for squirrels. In the attic place a bright light and a radio with blaring noise. Try rap music, who can stand that? Go into the attic and beat on a pan or any such thing just to keep the animals awake and disturbed. This takes about three days and the mom will move her little ones out to a more suitable place. Then you should find their entry way and repair it. I have told a lot of people how to do this and I could tell by their voices that they thought I was bit looney but in a few days they have called back and said "that really worked". There is an old wives tale about using mothballs but don't do it because it doesn't work and may kill the babies. Good luck, Ken

The raccoon (Procyon lotor), is a common urban animal, and native to North America. Raccoons are easy to recognize, with a black mask and ringed tail, as seen in the above photo. Raccoons tend to weigh between 10-20 pounds as adults, and live an average of 5 years. They are mostly nocturnal, and are omnivores, and will often eat pet food or garbage. They have become very acclimated to living in cities and urban areas. They are very strong, excellent climbers, very intelligent, and they are very skilled with their hands, which causes them to commonly break into homes and attics, where they cause considerable damage, and they also destroy other property, and thus raccoons are considered pest animals by many people, which is why I remove them.
