Bats in the Chimney -
Bats are sometimes a common problem for many homeowners. A colony of bats in the attic is a problem that is most often heard. However, having several bats in your chimney can be just as difficult. It is sometimes easier to remove bats that have located themselves in your chimney, as it is a smaller space.
You want to make sure that your damper is closed. This will keep bats from getting in. Remember; do not try to start a fire when your damper is closed. You need to find the exit point for the bats and install an exclusion device over it. Many people believe that when they see the bat fly out they are able to install a cap on the top of their chimney. However, not all of the bats may have exited and you will only be trapping them inside. Also, bats may not only be using the large chimney opening to get in. Bats prefer entering through smaller openings that are as small as 3/8 of an inch. This causes them to feel safe against predators. You will usually need to examine the exterior of your chimney to determine if there are any other gaps that are allowing the bats entry. Usually, these holes can be found where the chimney and the roof meet.
Walking around on your roof generally requires a 40 foot ladder and good balance. Some people may do better by hiring a professional service. Once you have confirmed all of the bats have left your chimney, you will need to install a chimney cap and seal up all of the openings. This will ensure that the bats are unable to get back in. Bats will either stay in the dark and dry space all year round if weather permits, or they will leave and migrate back in the spring.
Bats are great animals! Unfortunately, the do often choose to roost inside home and buildings, where they can create a big mess. It's a good idea to remove the bats from your belfry or attic, but it's also a great idea to avoid
harming them! Any competent wildlife control expert should have the knowledge and expertise to safely and effectively remove an entire colony of bats from a house without harming or killing a single one. I know that I have a 100%
success rate with bat removal jobs, and I believe the list of companies that I've compiled in my directory is of similar quality. If you want to learn more, please read my How To Get Rid of Bats page.
