I commonly extract dead animal carcasses from homes and property. The very animals that commonly invade houses die inside houses, and when they do, they create a very unpleasant odor as the carcass decays. The successful removal of deceased wildlife definitely requires experience and knowledge of building architecture and animal behavior. I've cut and pried open every nook and cranny imaginable to locate and remove rotting critter bodies. Getting rid of an opossum’s carcass - If you have lately been wondering why your house smells of a rotten dead animal lately, you might have been paid a surprise visit by an opossum that eventually died somewhere in the house. With their natural ability to climb and crawl along the walls, it is not uncommon for opossums to show up in people’s residences, with attics being their most commonly used entry points. They may even enter your house through chimneys or any other holes in the walls.

Not only is the stench of a rotting animal carcass unbearable, it can also become the breeding ground for insects, parasites and disease-causing bacteria. However, one of the biggest challenges in removing the carcass is to first locate it. Take this picture as an example. Even with the strong stench of its decomposing body, it was close to impossible to locate this dead opossum and it did take a few good hours. I finally managed to dig it out from under the floorboards of the attic with the help of a crowbar.

Getting done with the first step i.e. locating the carcass, the next important task was to safely remove it and find out where the opossum entered from in order to prevent any such episodes in the future. Apart from removing the dead animal by securely packing it away in a garbage bag, I also made sure that the site was thoroughly cleaned. To do that, I disinfected the area under the floorboards and deodorized it in order to get rid of the unpleasant odor the residents had to bear with.

With the successful detection and sealing of the opossum's entry point, I proceeded towards the last step of my carcass removal routine – closing the hole I dug up in the attic’s floorboard. It took me a while but in the end, I earned the satisfaction of a job well done.
