The boa constrictor is one of the largest snakes available as a pet. Some people have attempted in the past to keep a boa as a pet but it is illegal in some areas. If you are interested in obtaining a boa as a pet, you should review your state and county laws to make sure that you are able. Animal welfare groups highly suggest against snake owners attempting to keep boa constrictors as a pet.
If you are determined to own a snake as a pet you need to make sure that you are committed. Boa constrictors that are kept in captivity are able to live more than 20 years. They need to have an enclosure that is extremely large, as well as accessorized with branches and logs. This not only provides the snake with something to climb on, but it aids with the proper shedding of the boa’s skin. You will also need to make sure that you provide them with a dish of water that is large enough for the boa to immerse himself. This water needs to be changed often as boas are known to defecate in their drinking dish.
The boas are some of the largest types of snakes and usually weigh more than 60 pounds. This is sometimes too heavy for even the most experience snake owner to handle. Boas are able to grow as long as 14 inches in length. Their diets consist of birds and other small mammals. A boa constrictor is able to capture and kill its prey by coiling itself around them and suffocating them but making it impossible for their lungs to expand.
Boa constrictors are usually not harmful to most humans as the boa is aware that humans are too large to constrict and eat. However, if you have a rodent scent left on your hands, the boa may attempt to bite you.
Running a wildlife removal business in the state of Florida gives me the chance to see all kinds of interesting snakes! Florida has about 45 species of snake, and I've seen 29 of them so far. I've always got my eye out for new species, and
I love spotting rare snakes in Florida. I also have a thing for venomous snakes - they're not too common in FL, so I always enjoy the chance to see a poisonous serpent. I really like snakes, and I've never hurt or killed one. They're an
important part of the ecosystem, and often persecuted. Still, if you don't want snakes in your house or on your property, and judging from the number of phone calls I receive regarding snake problems, you don't, then give me or a local snake
expert in your area a call, and we can remove the snakes from your property for you. I use many snake control methods - from snake traps, to snake repellents, to habitat modification, but most of all, good old-fashioned capture and removal.
