A garter snake is more commonly referred to as a garden snake or grass snake. These snakes will usually not grow more than two feet in length. They are usually referred to as garden snakes because they are usually found in parks, yards, gardens, meadows and forests.

Garter snakes have forked tongues that are a unique feature to them. Garter snakes will use their tongues as a sense of smell and will usually flick their tongue into the air. This is one of the best features to determine if the snake is a garter snake. These reptiles have an incredibly strong vision and are extremely agile.

Because of the garter snake’s small size they are often the victims of numerous predators in the yard. They are small meals for owls, hawks, crows, raccoons and skunks. You should smell the air around your garden. If the garter snake feels that they are threatened, they will emit an odor that is sweet and unpleasant as a method of defense. If you smell this in the air, you will be able to determine if you have garter snakes located in your lawn. Also because of their size they will cool down and heat up very quickly. They are often seen basking in the yard in the sun.

When the garter snake is hunting in your yard it will usually rely primarily on its sight, hearing, taste and smell. The reptile is able to hear by sensing the vibrations that are on the ground. The garter snake will usually hunt for their meals during the parts of the day are cooler such as early morning, or early evening. Some garter snakes will hunt in the late afternoon on days that are cooler. The garter snake will usually eat anything that they are able to overpower. Their meals can consist of rodents, frogs, insects, earthworms, slugs, lizards and so on.

Running a wildlife removal business in the state of Florida gives me the chance to see all kinds of interesting snakes! Florida has about 45 species of snake, and I've seen 29 of them so far. I've always got my eye out for new species, and I love spotting rare snakes in Florida. I also have a thing for venomous snakes - they're not too common in FL, so I always enjoy the chance to see a poisonous serpent. I really like snakes, and I've never hurt or killed one. They're an important part of the ecosystem, and often persecuted. Still, if you don't want snakes in your house or on your property, and judging from the number of phone calls I receive regarding snake problems, you don't, then give me or a local snake expert in your area a call, and we can remove the snakes from your property for you. I use many snake control methods - from snake traps, to snake repellents, to habitat modification, but most of all, good old-fashioned capture and removal.
