There is no such thing as an effective bat repellant. Period. People will always try to sell you products, and magic cure-alls. Some products
work, and some don't. In the field of wildlife control, you'll often find more bogus products than effective ones. Bats are mammals. They are
similar to you and I. There is no magic scent or smell or chemical or poison that will deter them. The internet is full of bat deterrent
products, but none of them work. Some of these products include fox or coyote urine, which is a nice idea in theory, but it isn't effective. Other
products are simply made of naphthalene - moth balls - which some companies sell as an end-all be-all in wildlife repellent. Sorry, it simply doesn't
work. I've seen people dump OVER 50 POUNDS of mothballs in an attic where bats are living, and they don't care in the slightest. They keep using the
area. Devices such as ultrasonic sound emitters that make a high-pitched noise are completely useless. I've been to so many properties over the years in
which people have spent time and money on silly gimmicks like these, and then they hire a real bat control expert, and the problem is correctly taken care of.
Here we see a building that I went to, a hotel with tile roof, where the managers had installed six different ultrasonic sound emitters in the attic, on the
roof, on poles pointing at the roof, everywhere, and the bats didn't care in the slightest. There is no magic spray or powder or anything else to keep away bats.
If you have a bat problem and you wish to get rid of them, it must be done right. The bats must be properly excluded from the building by a pro, and that
pro must permanently seal off all bat entry points.
Bat repellent - There are no bat repellents on the market that have great or proven efficacy. Unfortunately, most of the products for commercial sale are gimmicks based on the theory that smell, sound, or light will negatively affect a bat. As with all nuisance animals, repellents are wastes of money. Bats are not like other pests inside your home. Bats can go unnoticed for years, especially if you?re not frequently crawling around the attic and crawlspaces of the building. There will be a smell that eventually pervades your home, and this is the result of the droppings that come from a colony of bats. Waste matter is one of the main reasons why nuisance animals, like bats, should be removed from a home. Too many serious illnesses can come from animal waste to ignore it piling up in the attic. The only way to keep bats away from your building is to make sure there are no holes that would allow the animal access to the interior. A bat does not need much space to enter a home, and damaged eaves and roof vents are prime places for the bats to crawl into a home. If bats are already inside, the only way to get rid of them, but legally and practically, is to exclude them from the home. This exclusion can be done with a one way door trap that allows the bats to leave but not re-enter. One way door traps present a complication if young bats are present, and most wildlife removal companies recommend that you wait until any offspring are young enough to leave the house before you attempt to exclude the colony.
