If opossums are your pests, then you need them physically trapped and removed. Most pest control companies are used to spraying poisons for insects and small invertebrates. They don't deal with larger animals, like mammals and reptiles. The opossum is a mammal, and the only way to stop possum damage is to catch the possums in a cage and have them taken away from the area. NOTE: You cannot use poison to control opossums. There is no registered or effective or legal (or humane) poison that will eliminate possums.

HHere we see an opossum in a cage, caught by a professional wildlife management company, not a pest control company. If you ever have any problems with wild animals, don't look under the "Pest Control" or "Exterminator", or "Extermination" section of your local yellow pages, look under the "Animal Removal" or "Wildlife Control" section, and get a real pro to take care of those opossums once and for all. You can't call Terminix or Orkin or any company like that to take care of a problem with large mammals and wildlife. This site has links to professional specialized wildlife trappers throughout the country.

Possums in homes - Pest Control Needed? A lot of people have a tendency to freak out a little bit when they hear or spot a wild animal living alongside them with their homes, and this is very much the case for the poor possum, who for the most part, is just looking for a safe and cozy home and perhaps somewhere warm to raise their babies.

There are a lot of common misconceptions about the possum, especially within homes. The threat of disease is, of course, one of the main things that a lot of people are concerned about, alongside the rather scary look to this animal, but there are a few things that you should know before you decide to judge the creature.

The possum may look scary, with tit?s rows of large pointed teeth and evil looking claws, but in reality, you have no real fear of the animal attacking you, your children, or your pets. This is something that you should be wary of, by all means, but this animal is more than likely going to run away or roll over and ?play? dead than it is going to fight back. There have even been incidents of wildlife professionals having their entire hand in the possum?s mouth when it has bared its ugly teeth, and nothing has happened, and although we wouldn?t ever advise that you do this, you should at least know that the animal itself is not normally a vicious one in nature.

Disease is a concern with any wild animal, but one disease that you will not normally have to worry about with the possum is rabies because the body temperature of the animal is so low that the virus cannot normally survive. There are a lot of other diseases that come hand in hand with this bizarre looking possum, but usually these will be a result of contamination from urine and feces, rather than the creature itself. Just a little food for thought before you start to look at inhumane ways to get rid of this animal!
